A major outage on Saturday morning caused Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services to stop working across India, affecting thousands of customers. The UPI services on multiple platforms, like Paytm, PhonePe, Google Pay, Bhim, and more, were disrupted due to this outage. Moreover, it also extended to major financial institutions like HDFC Bank, State Bank of India, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and more. Multiple users across the country reported that they could not transact using UPI. This also marks the fourth disruption of UPI services within a month.
UPI Services Down in India
More than 2,000 users reported the outage, according to the most recent data available on DownDetector. Around 11:26 AM IST, users started experiencing problems with UPI transactions, and by 1:02 PM IST, they were at their peak. This comes days after two significant outages occurred within a week on India’s most popular digital payment system.
This has been acknowledged by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which posted a message on its official X handle. The tweet says, “Partial UPI transaction reductions are now occurring due to NPCI’s sporadic technical problems. We will keep you informed as we attempt to fix the problem. We apologize for any inconvenience.
UPI Services Suffer from Multiple Outages
UPI services have been interrupted across the nation four times now. On March 26, 2025, customers of several UPI apps were unable to transact for over three hours, marking the first known outage. On March 31, the second significant outage occurred. Users also complained about problems with payment processing, which NPCI explained were caused by bank-side hold-ups at the conclusion of the fiscal year. However, on April 2, 2025, there was a temporary interruption because to “latency in the UPI network.”
On social networking platform X, a number of people voiced their displeasure with the downtime. One customer wrote, “I found out that UPI was not taking any payments, and I am stuck in the airport with a delayed flight and a lost wallet with all my cash and cards.” These days, UPI crashes occur far too frequently, trapping a lot of people. We depend on it every day, but the system continues to let us down,” wrote another X user.
